15.1.10 Cronkhite-Canada Syndrome

Pigmentation of the back of the hands associated with distal onycholysis and proximal separation of the nail plate (onychomadesis) (Fig. 15.46). It is a non-hereditary polyposis which rarely turns into cancer and is associated with a severe exudative bowel disease causing diarrhea accompanied by weight loss and edema. This syndrome is currently considered as an inflammatory disease. The cutaneous signs are common and quite characteristic: hyperpigmentation, particularly of the folds and palms (Fig. 15.47). Constant modifications of the appendages are nail appearing yellow and separated (xanthonychia and onycholysis) (Fig. 15.46) and alopecia.
